Indigestion is a very common problem, it is estimated that over 40% of the population have experienced indigestion at some point in their lives.
Indigestion or dyspepsia (upset stomach) is pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen. Indigestion can come in various degrees of pain, the symptoms include:-
Feeling full or bloated after starting or finishing a meal,
Feeling nausea and evening vomiting after a meal,
Flatulence,
Loss of appetite,
Heartburn (some people can mistake this for a heart attack).
Burning in the epigastric area - part of the tummy under the breast bone.
The stomach produces acid to help the digestion of foods, the stomach is very sensitive to the acid so has a protective lining. On occasions the protective lining isn't adequate so the acid comes into contact with the cells lining the stomach leading to inflammation and irritation.
In most cases of indigestion it is caused by eating, but other causes can be due to medication that we take or an infection. Stomach lining inflammation can be caused by:-
Over indulgence in food or alcohol
Slumped posture whilst eating
Spicy or fatty food
Not eating food regularly enough
An infection
Disorders of the intestines, gallbladder or pancreas
The use of non-steroidal anti-inglammatories
Inflammation of the gullet (oesophagus)
The way to avoid indigestion:-
To stop smoking
Lose weight if you are overweight
Chew your food properly
Eat regularly
Don't rush eating
Try to avoid over-indulging in food and alcohol
Keep a diary to help find the cause of indigestion
Avoid stressful situations as this can affect the digestive system
Don't eat late at night
Take care when taking medicines that may cause indigestion
Don't drink to much coffee and carbonated drinks
Raise the head of the bed by 6-8 inches to help keep acid down
Avoid wearing tight clothing or tight belts
If the symptoms persist then seek your GP's advise, as it could be something a little more sinister
