Acne, blackheads, cysts how to help prevent them

Acne is the common cause of spots, it is more common in boys between 12 and 25. If untreated Acne can last for 4 to 5 years, if untreated acne can lead to scarring, if treated it can reduce or even disappear after a few months, but you will need to keep taking the treatment for a few years in order to stop the acne from returning.

Acne is more common in the face but can effect the neck, back and chest, it effects 9 out of 10 teenagers, this is due to the hormonal changes, small sebaceous glands lie under the skin which make oil (sebum) that keeps the skin smooth and supple, but due to the hormonal change teenagers make more sebum which makes the skin more greasy.

Some pores become blocked due to the top of the pores becoming thicker, combined with dead skin cells that are shed into the pores. you can see the plugs at the top of the pores as small spots (comedones) blackheads or whiteheads. The black of the blackheads are due to skin pigments not dirt as most people believe.

Sebum may collect under blocked pores which become pimples or papules, in mild cases of acne it shouldn't progress beyond the pimples, blackheads and whiteheads.

Trapped sebum is ideal for a bacterium called P. acne to live and multiply. Small numbers of the bacterium can live on the skin and cause no harm, but if a large number develop then it can effect the immune system which will cause inflammation and redness, this can lead to spots becoming large and can fill with pus (pustules). In some cases these pustules can lead to nodules or even cysts.

Each spot will heal eventually but can leave the skin discoloured for several months, there can also be a small scar left where the inflamed spot was.

In some rare cases some diseases in women and girls can cause acne, or make acne worse. Poly cystic ovary syndrome, or conditions that cause excessive male hormones in the ovary or adrenal gland. Another rare cause is chemicals in some workplaces (halogenated hydrocarbons).

There are certain make-ups, medications, anabolic steriods, which can make acne worse.
